    What are hemorrhoids?

【Hemorrhoids】are a type of anal canal disease caused by the dilation of veins in the anal canal and lower rectum. Hemorrhoids can be classified into external hemorrhoids, which occur outside the anal sphincter, and internal hemorrhoids, which occur inside the anal canal. The condition where both external and internal hemorrhoids are present is known as mixed hemorrhoids. Symptoms of hemorrhoids include both internal and external manifestations.

The severity of hemorrhoids is graded.

Due to embarrassment about seeking medical help in the early stages of the condition, many people delay treatment, so they often don’t seek medical attention until the symptoms progress to the fourth stage.

    First degree:

There may be slight bleeding during bowel movements, accompanied by itching and discharge, but the hemorrhoids do not protrude from the anus.

    Second degree:

In addition to bleeding, hemorrhoids may protrude from the anus during bowel movements but will automatically retract after defecation.

    Third degree:

Hemorrhoids continue to enlarge, protruding from the anus after defecation, requiring manual reinsertion into the anal canal.

    Fourth degree:

Hemorrhoids protrude from the anus persistently and cannot be manually reinserted.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    Causes of hemorrhoids

When the internal cushions of the anus swell abnormally or when blood vessels and muscle fibers rupture due to changes in pressure, uncomfortable pathological hemorrhoids may form. Because the anus and rectum are located in the lower part of the body, blood flow back is relatively difficult, making this condition more common in populations that need to stand or sit for long periods of time. Prolonged pressure buildup may lead to poor blood flow back, causing congestion of hemorrhoids, a condition that may be associated with factors such as high blood pressure, constipation and pregnancy.

    Types of Hemorrhoids
    1. Internal hemorrhoids refer to swollen veins in the rectal mucosa and the venous plexus of the rectum, surrounded by columnar cells of the anal mucosa. Early symptoms mainly include bleeding during or after bowel movements, while in later stages, the hemorrhoids may protrude outside the anus during defecation due to gradual enlargement.
    2. External hemorrhoids, on the other hand, are caused by dilation, tortuosity or recurrent inflammation of the venous plexus below the rectum, with the outer part composed of squamous epithelial cells of the anus. External hemorrhoids are characterized by irregular shapes, minimal bleeding, but prominent symptoms such as pain, swelling, itching and a sensation of a foreign body.
    3. Mixed hemorrhoids occur at the dentate line, where the upper and lower venous plexuses of the rectum are both dilated. They are characterized by a continuous connection between the internal and external parts, without clear demarcation, as the internal and external portions merge into one.
Before, I had hemorrhoids, and it hadn't recurred for several years. However, recently, due to frequent constipation, I started experiencing a bit of diarrhea after beginning to drink DS. Why has my hemorrhoids recurred recently?

Hemorrhoids are essentially caused by the dilation of the veins around the anus, which can obstruct bowel movements. If the stool is too dry and hard, it may scratch the mucous membrane and cause bleeding. Therefore, hemorrhoids are usually accompanied by bleeding and swelling, mainly due to the swelling around the anus compressing the nerves and blood circulation.

The main causes of hemorrhoids include fecal impaction, constipation and damage to the intestinal mucosa. Spicy foods and alcohol can directly stimulate the vagus nerve in the intestines and damage the intestinal mucosa, while fecal impaction and constipation are usually caused by inadequate intestinal motility, insufficient protein intake and insufficient probiotic fiber. Therefore, when probiotic fiber helps to remove fecal impaction and repair the intestinal mucosa, previously latent hemorrhoids may reappear. During the repair process, congestion and toxins in the hemorrhoidal veins are also cleared, so there may be a healing reaction, namely hemorrhoidal symptoms.

In conclusion, it’s not the probiotics that cause hemorrhoids, but rather that hemorrhoids were already present but asymptomatic. Additionally, consuming spicy foods or alcohol may also trigger a recurrence of hemorrhoids. This phenomenon is actually a normal response of the body to clear the lesion.

Why should DS Pre & Probiotic Fibre be considered as a supplement in hemorrhoid treatment?

A deficiency in probiotics can lead to slowed intestinal motility, resulting in difficulties with bowel movements, prolonged defecation times, and even the possibility of rectal bleeding. Persistent constipation can cause anxiety, and straining during defecation and prolonged defecation times can increase abdominal pressure, impeding venous return in the rectal and anal veins, which can ultimately lead to the development of hemorrhoids.
